چکیده

Higher Productivity in Importing German Manufacturing Firms: Self-Selection, Learning from Importing, or Both? This paper uses a newly available comprehensive panel data set for manufacturing enterprises from 2001 to 2005 to document the first empirical results on the relationship between imports and productivity for Germany, a leading actor on the world market for goods. Furthermore, for the first time the direction of causality in this relationship is investigated systematically by testing for self-selection of more productive firms into importing, and for productivity-enhancing effects of imports (‘learning-by-importing’). We find a positive link between importing and productivity. From an empirical model with fixed enterprise effects that controls for firm size, industry, and unobservable firm heterogeneity we see that the premia for trading internationally are about the same in West and East Germany. Compared to firms that do not trade at all two-way traders do have the highest premia, followed by firms that only export, while firms that only import have the smallest estimated premia. We find evidence for a positive impact of productivity on importing, pointing to selfselection of more productive enterprises into imports, but no evidence for positive effects of importing on productivity due to learning-by-importing. Exporting and productivity: Evidence for Egypt and Morocco

This paper investigates the link between exporting and importing activities and firm performance using a rich dataset on Egyptian and Moroccan firms. We test the export premium, self-selection and learning-by-exporting hypotheses using a number of firm characteristics. Our analysis also includes importing activities as a source of learning and considers their effects on productivity changes. A ...

Firm Level Productivity and Exporting in the Uganda’s Manufacturing Sector

The role of exports in helping attain and sustain high rates of growth especially in the context of developing countries cannot be overemphasized. Exports usually tend to be associated with both static gains (resulting for instance from access to larger outside markets) as well as dynamic gains (including learning from exporting and productivity gains). With regard to the dynamic gains from tra...

Foreign Technology Transfer and Productivity: Evidence From a Matched Sample

We examine the causal effects of alternative foreign technology transfer channels on the productivity of Turkish manufacturing plants, using propensity score matching techniques that limit implicit assumptions about plant homogeneity and self selection imbedded in standard estimates of such effects. We find positive impacts of technology transfer through foreign direct investment (FDI), exporti...

Effect of Productivity on Export: New Evidence from Iran’s Manufacturing Industries

Based on the recent literature of heterogeneous firms, productive firms self select themselves into foreign markets. In this framework, there is a productivity rise prior to exporting. On the other words, different export performance across firms is linked to their heterogeneity.   The main purpose of the present paper is to examine the so-called hypothesis of heterogeneous firm in Iran. For ...

Importing, Exporting and Firm-Level Employment Volatility

In this paper, we use detailed trade and transactions data for the U.S. manufacturing sector to empirically analyze the direction and magnitude of the association between firm-level exposure to trade and the volatility of employment growth. We find that, relative to purely domestic firms, firms that only export and firms that both export and import are less volatile, whereas firms that only imp...
